Rostov And Caucasian Mineral Waters Region

We invite you to visit Rostov-on-Don city and the Rostov region which is inseparably connected with the history of the Don Cossacks. The history of The Great Don Army Region is a history of continuous protection of the southern borders of the Russian state from invaders. As it was stated by Leo Tolstoy, "the border gave rise to the Cossacks and Cossacks created Russia". Now Rostov is one of the largest centers of Russian South, transport gate of North Caucasus region. After visiting gorgeous city of Rostov-on-Don you take a train to continue the trip in Russian most famous resort area – The Caucasus Mineral Waters. Caucasus Mineral Waters is known for its mountain landscapes: steppe and dormant volcanoes of the Pyatigorie (Five Mountains land) and its thermal springs was first mentioned by Arab explorer Ibn Battuta in 1334. The famous Silk Path used to ran through this region, so it is not surprising that more than 80 nationalities contributed to its culture.                                                                                                               

These few days will take you through the most beautiful corners of the North Caucasus region. You will learn about rich history, traditions, culture and cuisine of the region. Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Alexander Solzhenitsin, Anna Pavlova used to walk down these paths. You will also see the main attraction of the region, Mount Elbrus (5642 meters) the highest peak of Europe.

DAY 1

Arrival to Rostov-on-Don. Our representative will meet you at the railway station or at the airport. Transfer to the hotel selected. Accommodation. Lunch. Rostov city sightseeing tour: the Quay of Don River, Bolshaya Sadovaya street, the Theatre Square, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Our Lady, the former Armenian city Nakhchivan absorbed by Rostov in 1928. You will pass through the old streets of Rostov, see the mansions that once belonged to the Rostov rich, and learn the history of the city. You will visit the city quay, main streets and town square, learn the history of the merger of Rostov with neighbouring settlements: Nakhichevan, Aleksandrovka, Gnilovskaya, old urban legends and new ideas for the future development of Rostov, historical monuments and a new urban sculpture - all this creates a unique image of the capital of the southern region. Motor boat tour. Return to the hotel, rest. Dinner at one of Rostov’s restaurants (to pay on spot). Free time. (L)

DAY 2

Breakfast. This day you will visit two of the Cossack capitals: the Stanitsa (big settlement at the Cossak regions) Starocherkasskaya and the city Novocherkassk. Excursion to the Stanitsa Starocherkasskaya: visiting the estate of Ataman Ephraim Army, visiting the ataman's Palace, excursion to the oldest Military Resurrection Cathedral, rise to the bell tower of the Cathedral. Excursion to the village Starocherkasskaya which was the capital of the Don Cossacks for over 150 years, introduces the history and culture of the Cossacks of the Lower Don. It is a huge Museum complex area of 180 hectares, where more than 100 monuments are preserved. Military Resurrection Cathedral founded by Peter the Great is the oldest existing temple of the Don land. There is a square near the Cathedral where people made meetings and decided the most important questions of Cossack life. Farmstead of chieftain Ephraim including the ataman's Palace, the house church, family cemetery. Here people remember the beautiful ataman’s wife Melaniya Karpovna whose wedding really stuck in our memory. Lunch. Excursion in Novocherkassk with a visit to the third largest Ascension Cathedral in Russia, a tour of the ataman's Palace. Novocherkassk was founded in 1805. It was created as a residence of Don chieftains and was the main city of the Don Cossacks. We will make a tour of the Museum dedicated to the glorious history of the Don Cossacks. The tour passes thought the streets and squares of the city, the tourists will see the monuments of the heroes of the Don land and also the Reconciliation and the Concent monument dedicated to all victims of Civil War in Russia. At the end of the tour everyone is invited to stroll through the cozy alleys of Alexander Garden, admire the majestic simplicity of the ataman's Palace. Departure from Novocherkassk to Rostov-on-Don. DAY 3

Breakfast. Check-out before 12.00. Clients can leave their luggage at the left-luggage room. Free time in the city. Following optional tours are recommended (quotation on request): -Rostov Fine Art Museum tour -Taganrog and Tanais tour . In Taganrog you will visit the Chekhov Shop museum - two-storey house where the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov stayed with his family from 1869 to 1874. His father merchant Pavel Chekhov kept The Tea, sugar, coffee, and other colonial goods shop there. Then you will visit archaeological park on the place of ancient Greek city Tanais. Transfer to the railway station, departure for Kislovodsk by train №50 at 23:14 (B)

DAY 4

10:11 Arrival in Kislovodsk. Meeting with our representative at the railway station. Transfer to the chosen hotel. Accommodation. Lunch. After a couple of hours you will meet the guide and get around Kislovodsk city park. It has the second largest park territory in Europe (950 hectares) and over 250 species of trees. We will start by going up the cable way. From above you will see a splendid view of Elbrus. We will take our time to fully enjoy the beauty of these places. You will be offered three types of Kislovodsk Narzan water in the Main Narzan Gallery, and we will finish our tour at the Main Narzan Baths. Return to the hotel, free time. Dinner in one of numerous restaurants of Kurortny boulevard or in the hotel (to pay on spot). If you wish, you can visit recreation center or spa in the hotel. (L)

DAY 5

Breakfast. Today we offer you to take a long sleep and only before lunch we will go to Alikanovsk Gorge, where you will admire mountain landscape and take a look at “real Caucasus” in small scale. The guide will take you to the Medovye (The Honey) waterfalls. Along the way you can stop at natural monument – Koltso (The Ring) Mountain. Nevertheless the main object to visit is Medovye waterfalls, where from the viewpoint you can enjoy the mountain landscape and 5 waterfalls of different height, alpine meadows and rocks covered with net of narrow gorges. Along with that our guide will take you to another natural monument – Rim (Rome) Mountain and will tell you about ancient Alan settlement (6th-14th century) that once stood at its foot. After the trip to Medovye falls you will have time to rest and enjoy the view, taste national cuisine. Local chefs will treat you to the best hychin and kebab (lunch is for additional payment). After lunch you can visit local museum “Karachai yard” and small village house with a cattle. In the end of this program you will see a performance of dancers and musicians and even will have a chance to learn some moves (at extra charge). On your way back you will visit a Tea House, taste herbal tea and homemade jam, which are of great variety here. Before returning to the hotel you will visit the Castle of Intrigue and Love to hear about the beautiful Caucasus legend that gave the name to this place. Return to the hotel. Dinner (to pay on spot). (B)

DAY 6

Breakfast. Today you will go around cities of Caucasus Mineral Waters. You will learn about mineral springs of the region. The guide will take you to Yessentuki where in the city park you will see mineral water galleries and the building of mud baths built in ancient-roman style and of course you will taste legendary mineral water (Yessentuki-4, Yessentuki-17). Next stop is Zheleznovodsk. You will take a walk along the streets surrounded by 19th century buildings. Fabulous masterpieces such as former summer house of Emir of Bukharia, Pushkin Gallery, Ostrovsky Baths built in Turkish style, Cascade staircase decorate the city park. During our tour you will taste mineral water from a unique hot spring “Slavyanovsky”. Lunch at the restaurant. Trip to the legendary Tersky Stud. In 1889 at the foot of Zmeyka mountain, on the blessed land of Caucasus, count Sergei Stroganov started raising Arab horses in Russia, which now are the pride of Russia and Tersky Stud. In fact, half of world’s Arab breed are descendants of Tersky’s horses. More than 40 countries have horses raised on this ranch and almost all best stables of Middle East have either “Russian” Arabs or their descendants. Population of this stud is over 380 pure breed Arab horses. During the tour you will emerge into an amazing centennial life of the stud, hear its history, legends and see the demonstration of elite horses, award and race winners. Note: In case the organization of such program is impossible (games, horse races, festivals and other actions might take place), the tour operator will offer to visit the horse club “Canyon” where the tourists will see the performance by dzhigits, learn many interesting things about horses and enjoy horse riding, if they wish. Return to Kislovodsk. Dinner (to pay on spot). (BL)

DAY 7

Breakfast. The final day of the itinerary will take you to the viewpoint to enjoy the view of Mount Elbrus. Then you will visit the oldest city of Caucasus Mineral Waters, Pyatigorsk (1780). You will stroll down the magnificent park Tsvetnik, enjoy the view from Aeolus’s Harp Pavilion and see the famous cave Lake Proval. Pyatigorsk saw many historical events and famous people like Leo Tolstoy, Alexander Pushkin, but the most important without doubt is Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov, who lived here, wrote about this region and died on the duel not far from Mashuk Mountain (1841). You will visit the Lermontov’s House museum. It was found in 1912 in memory of the great Russian poet and officer Mikhail Lermontov. It is a well-known literary museum based in the house where the poet spent the last months of his life and wrote the last verses. The museum consists of several departments, its collections contain numerous unique displays, including personal belongings of the poet. You will visit Ethnological museum of Pyatigorsk as well. Lunch. Return to Kislovodsk. Free time or walk around the Kislovodsk city park with our guide who will show St. Nicholas Cathedral (1888). The Fortress museum tour is recommended (upon request). The museum boasts its archeological, ethnographical collections and Kislovodsk porcelain ware. The exhibit tells about the history of Caucasian people, about research of mineral sources in the area, development of the Kislovodsk resort and the Cossacks’ role in its development. Farewell dinner with traditional Caucasian cuisine. (BLD)

DAY 8

Breakfast. Check out by 12:00. Transfer to the airport railway station of Mineralnye Vody. End of the program. (B)
